A retailer before a public personality

Gary Vaynerchuk's career in media grew out of his family's wine business. Wine Library's account describes him working in the store during his college years, becoming its wine buyer and helping rebrand the business as Wine Library. His interest in collecting baseball cards became an entry point to understanding wine as a product with its own knowledge and culture. The store's public biography describes an approach focused on helping customers explore wines without being intimidated by experts or conventions. That retail setting matters to his later work: his early content was attached to products, buying decisions and customer relationships, rather than beginning as a standalone entertainment business.

Learning in public through video

Vaynerchuk began WineLibraryTV in 2006, according to his official biography. The episodic online show offered wine reviews and commentary, using a conversational style that differed from traditional wine education. His biography records frequent production over five years and connects this period to the development of his wider business content. A 2008 Web 2.0 keynote helped bring that message to a new audience, and his first book, Crush It!, was published in 2009. These activities expanded his public identity beyond the store. They also established a recurring pattern in his work: operate a business, explain what he is learning and turn that explanation into another channel for reaching people.

From one business to an agency

In 2009, Vaynerchuk co-founded VaynerMedia with his brother AJ. The agency extended the marketing approach used for Wine Library into work for other companies. Its current leadership page identifies him as CEO, while his official press biography also names him chairman of VaynerX, the holding company of which VaynerMedia is part. His public work includes books, speaking and the GaryVee Audio Experience podcast alongside those operating roles. The distinction is useful: GaryVee is a personal media identity, VaynerMedia is an advertising agency, and VaynerX is the wider corporate structure. The businesses are connected, but the names describe different parts of his professional activities.

Creating a character universe

Vaynerchuk introduced VeeFriends in 2021. Its official guide describes an entertainment company built around characters representing traits such as empathy, resilience and curiosity. The first collection used his hand-drawn characters as digital collectibles and connected holders to VeeCon events. The project subsequently expanded into physical trading cards, comics, toys, apparel and other formats. Those developments add a different chapter to his career, moving from marketing services and commentary into character-based intellectual property. The company's stated ambition is to encourage connection and self-awareness through those characters. That is its creative purpose; the existence of the products and formats is the documented business activity behind the claim.
