Engineering before a public audience

Mark Rober's career began in engineering before it became a familiar presence on YouTube. In his first-person account for PBS, he describes working at NASA for nine years, including seven on the Curiosity rover, and later spending several years at Apple.

Those settings gave him experience working on physical products with other specialists. His later public work would take a different form, but it retained an interest in building things, testing an idea and understanding why a particular mechanism behaves as it does.

Using curiosity as an introduction to science

Rober's videos make engineering concepts approachable through an experiment or a build that people want to watch. The spectacle creates an opening, after which he can explain the physical principles involved in what the audience has just seen.

That approach connects creative presentation with technical understanding. The finished video has to work as entertainment, while the explanation gives viewers a way to see more than the final result. It invites them to become interested in the process behind it.

Founding CrunchLabs

Rober founded CrunchLabs in 2022, bringing his interest in engineering education into a product business. The company develops kits that allow customers to build physical projects and connect those activities with explanatory video material.

The change adds a practical dimension to his creator work. A viewer can watch someone else make a machine; a customer can assemble a project, test its behaviour and begin working through the same kind of questions directly.

Designing for different stages of making

CrunchLabs offers several product families, including Build Box, Hack Pack and Creative Kit. They introduce different forms of building, with engineering projects, robotics and coding appearing across the range.

The variety matters because people arrive with different interests and levels of experience. A product company must consider instructions, components and the sequence in which a maker encounters an idea, alongside the entertainment value of the video that accompanies the activity.

Turning explanation into participation

CrunchLabs is the primary company linked to this portrait. It connects Rober's background as an engineer with his public role as a creator who can make a technical subject feel inviting.

His entrepreneurial work sits at the meeting point of those skills. The creator establishes an engaging question, the engineer understands the mechanism and the product team develops an experience another person can build. The separate company portrait follows that product and learning model in more detail.
