A hosting idea becomes a platform
Airbnb’s company history begins with hosting guests in San Francisco in 2007. Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia’s early experiment developed into a business with co-founder Nathan Blecharczyk.
The central relationship was between people with a place to offer and travellers looking for somewhere to stay. A platform made discovery, presentation and booking part of a shared experience.
The work between hosts and guests
The company provides a marketplace through which hosts present accommodation and guests explore and book stays. Its service involves both sides of that relationship, with information and tools organised around the process of hosting and travelling.
This makes Airbnb different from a single accommodation operator: the platform connects many individual listings with people planning trips. Its official site and newsroom explain the business and its current offering.
Two sides of the same booking
Airbnb’s marketplace has to serve two people with different immediate goals. A host needs to explain the place being offered and manage the activity around a reservation. A guest needs enough information to decide whether that place fits a trip. The listing is where those interests meet, combining a description of accommodation with the practical route to a booking.
This relationship makes presentation part of the platform’s operating work. Photographs, property information and the sequence of decisions all contribute to how a traveller understands a stay. The company’s business background is therefore about coordinating an exchange between hosts and guests, with the interface supporting that exchange. Its newsroom provides the company account of that development.

Design as part of a business model
Chesky’s industrial-design background offers a useful perspective on the company’s early work. Design concerns how somebody encounters and uses a service, which is especially relevant when a booking involves a person and place the traveller has not previously known. The founder’s role sits within a team that also brought other creative and technical experience.
Airbnb’s company history follows how an initial hosting experiment became a platform for many independent listings. The move changed the scale of the problem: the service had to help people understand offers made by others, rather than simply describe one property controlled by the company. That is a central distinction between a marketplace and a conventional accommodation business.
Brian Chesky’s design background
Chesky’s portrait connects Airbnb with his industrial-design education and the decisions involved in building the company. Design is part of that history because the business depends on how people understand a listing and navigate a booking.
The company background and the founder story can be read together: one follows the platform, while the other follows the person who helped turn the initial hosting idea into an organisation.
