A designer becomes a founder

Brian Chesky approaches entrepreneurship through the discipline in which he trained: design. He graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2004 with a degree in industrial design. That background matters because the company he later helped create needed to make a new and unfamiliar kind of transaction understandable to ordinary travelers. The challenge extended beyond providing listings: people had to feel comfortable arranging a stay with someone they had never met.

RISD’s account of Chesky’s career connects his education to his emphasis on creative problem solving. His subsequent return to the school as its 2017 commencement speaker placed that path in view of another generation of designers. His story shows how skills acquired in a creative profession can become part of the operating approach of a technology business.

The first air mattresses

Airbnb dates its beginning to October 2007, when Chesky and Joe Gebbia hosted three guests in their San Francisco home. They called the service Airbed & Breakfast. Nathan Blecharczyk subsequently joined as a co-founder, bringing another part of the founding team together. The initial offering was modest, but it established the basic relationship between a host offering accommodation and a guest arranging a stay.

Airbed & Breakfast officially launched in March 2008, followed by the website in August. Those origins remain useful for understanding the business: a household with underused space could provide accommodation, while a traveler could find something beyond a conventional hotel. The company’s own history describes an expansion from that first apartment into a marketplace connecting hosts and guests across many countries. The name became Airbnb in 2009.

Building the company around the experience

Chesky remains Airbnb’s co-founder and chief executive officer. Its leadership biography describes him as setting the company’s vision and strategy, with a particular emphasis on the experience of hosts and guests. This places design inside leadership rather than treating it only as the appearance of a website or app.

Airbnb went public in December 2020. That milestone followed years of developing a business in which the company connects participants instead of owning all the accommodation itself. Chesky’s career consequently sits at the intersection of product design, hospitality and marketplace operations. The recurring question in this history is how to make an unfamiliar service feel usable and welcoming while supporting both sides of the exchange.
