Creating an audio service
Daniel Ek founded Spotify with Martin Lorentzon in 2006. The service launched in 2008, offering a way to stream music rather than purchase and store every recording separately. Spotify’s company history describes an audio platform that later expanded to include podcasts and audiobooks as well as music.
That progression creates the main thread of Ek’s career. Spotify needed to serve listeners while working with rights holders and creators whose material makes the service possible. Product decisions, distribution and relationships across the music industry were connected from the outset. The company’s subsequent expansion into additional audio formats added new kinds of content to that original listening experience.
Leading through expansion
Ek served as Spotify’s chief executive from its founding through December 31, 2025. During that period, the company developed from a new streaming service into an established audio business. Spotify became publicly listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 2018.
The company’s account of its leadership transition describes a division of responsibilities that had already been developing over several years. Gustav Söderström had been leading product and technology, while Alex Norström led business operations. Presenting this context makes the transition easier to understand: the change formalized an evolving leadership structure rather than simply replacing one person with another.
A different role from January 2026
On September 30, 2025, Spotify announced that Ek would become executive chairman on January 1, 2026. Söderström and Norström became co-chief executive officers on the same date. Spotify’s current company-information page confirms Ek’s executive-chairman title. An up-to-date biography should consequently describe him in that role, while preserving the long chief-executive chapter as history.
The announcement assigned Ek a focus on longer-term strategy, capital allocation and other strategic responsibilities. Executive chairmanship is therefore a continuing role in the company, with different responsibilities from running its daily operations as CEO. His story now includes both building Spotify as a founder and shaping a leadership transition intended to support its next stage.
