An entrepreneurial background in the internet
Elon Musk's early business career included Zip2, which supplied software for online publishing, and X.com, an online financial-services company that became part of the business later known as PayPal. Those ventures preceded the manufacturing and aerospace companies most closely associated with his name.
The sequence moved him from internet services into businesses requiring physical infrastructure, production facilities and engineering teams. His later career retained the ambition to change an established market, while the products became substantially different from those of his early software ventures.

Founding SpaceX
Musk founded SpaceX in 2002. The company's work includes launch vehicles, spacecraft and the Starlink satellite network. Its public mission links reducing the cost of space transport with a longer-term ambition to extend human activity beyond Earth.
Reusable rocket operations became an important part of that approach. Developing and operating aerospace hardware required a different business model from an internet service: engineering, testing, launch operations and customer contracts all formed part of the company's development.
Joining and building Tesla
Tesla was incorporated in 2003 before Musk became involved. He joined as an early investor and board chairman in 2004 and later became its chief executive officer in 2008. Tesla's own biography describes him as a co-founder. These distinctions matter when describing the company's origins: founding SpaceX and joining Tesla were different events.
Tesla's product range grew from the Roadster into electric vehicles aimed at broader markets, alongside energy storage and related technologies. Musk's business association with the company combines investment, leadership and product development.
A highly visible founder identity
Musk's companies make products that are closely associated with their public-facing leader. His personal communication on X adds another channel through which audiences encounter his ideas, company updates and opinions. This visibility connects a technology-business career with a prominent online identity.
The operating businesses nevertheless have distinct products and organizations. SpaceX's launch and satellite work and Tesla's vehicle and energy work belong to different industries, even where their founder's public presence links them in the wider conversation.
