Starting with an online bookstore

Jeff Bezos founded Amazon in 1994. The business began by selling books online, using the internet to offer a selection that differed from the physical constraints of a conventional shop. Its early identity connected a familiar product with a new distribution channel.

Bezos's 1997 shareholder letter describes a company focused on customers, repeat purchases and long-term investment. The letter became an enduring reference point for how Amazon explained its priorities as it expanded beyond its initial category.

A business extending beyond retail

Amazon grew into a much broader organization, with a marketplace, logistics operations, subscriptions and technology services. Cloud computing through Amazon Web Services became a separate commercial activity from selling consumer goods. These businesses serve different customers while sharing the wider Amazon organization.

Bezos's career is therefore connected to more than the creation of an e-commerce storefront. The company he founded built infrastructure for third-party sellers, consumers and organizations using computing services. Its development combined customer-facing products with systems operating behind them.

A change in leadership responsibilities

In 2021, Bezos moved from Amazon's chief executive role to executive chair of its board. Andy Jassy became chief executive officer. The change separated Bezos's continuing association as founder and chair from the day-to-day chief executive position.

Amazon's leadership record is a useful anchor for describing that distinction. A founder can remain influential and formally involved after another executive takes responsibility for leading the company. Bezos's biography should therefore identify the transition rather than present him as Amazon's current CEO.

Building an aerospace company

Bezos founded Blue Origin in 2000. The company develops aerospace systems and presents its mission around a future in which many more people can live and work in space. Its activities include reusable launch vehicles and work on space infrastructure.

Blue Origin represents a different entrepreneurial project from Amazon. Retail, computing and aerospace require different products and technical capabilities. Together, the companies illustrate the movement of Bezos's business interests from an early internet opportunity toward capital-intensive infrastructure and engineering.
