From websites to payments
John Collison grew up in Ireland and began building websites at fourteen, according to Stanford's biography. He later studied physics at Harvard before leaving to work on Stripe full time. With his older brother Patrick, he started the company in 2010 to make accepting online payments simpler. This background places software-building before his executive career. It also gives a specific context to the payments problem: the founders were people trying to build things on the internet and wanted financial services that were easier to integrate into those products. John is currently Stripe's co-founder and president, as confirmed by the company's leadership page.
A prototype before a large platform
UC Berkeley Haas' account of an interview with Patrick Collison records John suggesting that they build a payments prototype after a startup event in 2009. The idea was an easier way to move money online. Stripe now describes a wider range of economic infrastructure used by businesses to accept payments and manage their online operations. Its dual headquarters are in San Francisco and Dublin. The difference between the initial prototype and the company's present scope helps explain the development of the venture. John's role as president belongs to that broader organisation, while Patrick is CEO; the company's official information distinguishes the two positions.
Keeping startup history in perspective
In a 2015 Stanford talk, Collison cautioned against treating a mature company's expansive mission as a precise account of what its founders understood at the beginning. He observed that startups often begin with tactical problems and describe themselves more broadly as their work develops. His point was that founders can recognise a useful problem without already knowing the largest possible opportunity around it. Stanford's account of the discussion also emphasises uncertainty and setbacks in the histories of celebrated startups. This is an explicitly stated view from his talk, not a claim that any particular entrepreneurial path is guaranteed to succeed. It adds a practical counterweight to polished origin stories.
Conversations with other builders
Collison's public work includes Cheeky Pint, an interview series introduced in 2025. Its trailer describes conversations with founders and builders over a pint, including Greg Brockman, Susan Li, Kyle Vogt and Pieter Levels. The series is distributed through an audio feed and Stripe's YouTube channel. It gives Collison another role besides company leadership: asking other people about the organisations and technologies they are building. The format connects him to a wider discussion of entrepreneurship without making him the author of every view expressed by a guest. It is a documented media project alongside, rather than a substitute for, his position at Stripe.

Supporting ideas beyond Stripe
Arc Institute lists John Collison among its founding donors. The independent nonprofit conducts research into complex diseases and works with partner universities. He is listed as a donor, while Patrick is also one of its co-founders. John has contributed to publishing as well: Stripe Press' edition of Poor Charlie's Almanack includes a foreword by him. These activities provide specific examples of involvement beyond payments, without implying that he runs the institute's scientific programmes or authored the underlying book.
