Starting with the customer
Michael Dell founded the business that became Dell Technologies in 1984 while he was a student at the University of Texas at Austin. His early computer business used a direct relationship with customers, allowing systems to be configured around their requirements. Dell’s official biography identifies him today as chairman and chief executive officer of Dell Technologies.
The founding story connects a practical computer business to a broader organizational principle: understand what a customer needs, then arrange the product and its delivery around that requirement. The company’s subsequent development required systems for assembling, selling and supporting computers at much greater scale. Dell’s career therefore includes operating design as well as product and market decisions.
Changing the shape of the business
Dell took the company private in 2013. In 2016, Dell and EMC combined, creating Dell Technologies. This expanded the company’s scope beyond the personal-computer business associated with its early years, bringing enterprise infrastructure and other technology capabilities into the same group. Dell Technologies returned to public markets in 2018.
These milestones describe changes in both ownership structure and business scope. They are more informative than treating the organization as unchanged since its first computer sales. Michael Dell continued leading through those transitions, while the business addressed customers ranging from individuals buying PCs to organizations managing substantial computing and information infrastructure.
Philanthropy alongside technology
Michael and Susan Dell established the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation in 1999. Its work concentrates on improving the lives of children and families, with programs that address education, health and economic opportunity. Michael Dell’s relationship to the foundation is separate from his executive responsibilities at Dell Technologies.
The foundation’s history gives his biography a second institutional strand. Commercial leadership concerns products, customers and the organization of a technology business; philanthropic work concerns how resources can support programs and opportunities outside that company. Both involve building organizations over time. Keeping the two roles distinct gives a clearer account of the responsibilities associated with his name and avoids implying that every foundation initiative is a Dell Technologies business activity.
