A foundation in computing and banking
Anne Boden graduated from Swansea University in 1981, having studied chemistry and computer science. She joined Lloyds Bank as a graduate trainee and subsequently developed a career spanning banking operations and technology. Her university interview describes working in the Lloyds computer department and attempting to improve how cheques were organized.
Her later decision to establish a bank came after that substantial experience inside existing financial institutions. This background distinguishes the story from an entrepreneur encountering banking for the first time. Boden had worked with the systems and organizational structures of large banks before attempting to build a different operating model.

Establishing Starling
Boden founded Starling Bank in 2014. The business was built around mobile banking, with the bank’s infrastructure and customer experience developed for that approach. The company subsequently expanded beyond its initial personal-account offering into business banking and banking technology.
As founder and chief executive, Boden led the early development of the institution. The idea involved more than designing an app: a bank must also create the systems and organization needed to operate its accounts. Her biography is useful because it connects a visible consumer interface to the less visible work of building a regulated institution and the technology that supports it.
The end of the chief-executive chapter
Boden announced in May 2023 that she would step down as chief executive on June 30, 2023. UKTN reported the planned move, and Boden’s final CEO letter explained her decision to step aside. John Mountain was named interim chief executive. Her title here identifies her as founder and former CEO.
The letter provides Boden’s own account of a leadership decision at the company she created. Founding a business and running it are connected responsibilities, but they do not necessarily remain held by the same person throughout its life. Her career includes a long period in established banking, the creation of a new bank and a subsequent transition away from its day-to-day executive leadership.
