From publishing to records

Richard Branson founded the Virgin Group after early ventures in publishing and music. His first business was the magazine Student. A mail-order record business followed, then a record shop and a recording studio. Virgin Records was established in 1973, building a recognizable identity around music before the name moved into other industries.

The progression is central to his biography. Virgin began with a specific audience and product, then developed a brand that could travel beyond its initial setting. The music company’s history included releases by artists such as Mike Oldfield and the Sex Pistols. These were distinct commercial decisions within a record business, rather than evidence that a brand alone could guarantee success in any new market.

Taking Virgin into the air

Virgin Atlantic began in 1984. Branson’s expansion into aviation placed the Virgin identity in a business with very different operating requirements from records. Airlines must coordinate aircraft, crews, routes and passenger service. His career therefore includes both the creation of a recognizable consumer brand and repeated attempts to apply it in new settings.

Virgin Records was sold in 1992. Branson subsequently continued developing the broader Virgin group, including ventures in telecommunications and travel. His history contains ventures that endured as well as projects that changed direction or ended. The reliable thread is his willingness to enter established industries with an alternative consumer proposition; individual results require their own evidence.

Business, philanthropy and spaceflight

Virgin Unite was founded in 2004 as the Virgin Group’s nonprofit foundation. Its account of Branson’s work describes support for partnerships addressing social and environmental issues. The foundation also helped establish initiatives such as The Elders. This strand of his career concerns convening and backing organizations, alongside his commercial ventures.

On July 11, 2021, Branson flew on Virgin Galactic’s Unity 22 mission. Virgin Galactic reported a crew of six, including two pilots and four mission specialists, and described the flight as part of its test program. That documented event provides a concrete milestone in the space venture’s development. Branson’s broader career remains defined by the Virgin name across several businesses, with the operational details and outcomes differing from one venture to another.
