Building a bank around mobile use

Anne Boden founded Starling in 2014 after a career spanning banking operations and technology. The company began with a mobile banking proposition, bringing account access and the supporting organisation into the same project.

Creating that experience involved more than an app interface. Starling needed the systems and operational structure of a bank, alongside the digital tools through which customers would use its accounts.

Personal accounts and business banking

Starling’s public offering includes personal and business accounts managed through digital channels. Its development also encompasses banking technology, extending the company’s work beyond the original consumer account.

The official website explains the available accounts and their features. The founder story helps put that product range in context: the starting point was an experienced banker’s attempt to organise a banking service around mobile use.

The account as an everyday interface

Starling’s mobile approach puts everyday account use in the foreground. A customer’s experience of a bank includes checking what has happened, making a payment and understanding the information attached to an account. Bringing those activities into a digital interface changes where the relationship is experienced, even though the organisation behind it still has to carry out banking operations.

The bank’s official site presents personal and business account routes separately. That separation reflects different kinds of use: a household account and a company account can involve different responsibilities, users and records. The product presentation connects the convenience of the interface with the practical jobs the customer needs the account to perform. Specific features are described on the current account pages.

Experience inside established banks before the new venture

Boden’s Swansea University interview places computing within the early years of her banking career. She describes working with systems and everyday processes at Lloyds, including the organisation of cheque sorting. That background helps explain why her later company story involved both a consumer experience and the operating structure behind it.

Starling therefore represents a change in how a bank could be built and used, informed by experience of how existing institutions worked. The historical source is valuable because it identifies a concrete professional setting before the founding in 2014. Her 2023 letter then records a later transition in leadership, giving the business story a beginning, an operating chapter and a documented change in the founder’s role.

Anne Boden’s founding chapter

Boden led the institution through its early years and announced in 2023 that she would step aside as chief executive. Her final CEO letter provides a dated account of that transition.

Her connection to Starling is presented here as founder and former chief executive. The separate entrepreneur portrait follows the computing and banking experience that preceded the company.
