Founding a software company

Bill Gates and Paul Allen founded Microsoft in 1975. Their early work included software for the Altair 8800, a computer associated with the emerging personal-computing market. The company developed around software that could be used on machines made by other businesses.

That approach placed Microsoft in a different position from a company selling only its own computer hardware. As personal computers spread, software operating systems and applications became important products in their own right. Gates's entrepreneurial career developed within that growing market.

Microsoft and the personal computer

Microsoft became closely associated with operating systems and productivity software, including Windows and Office. These products helped make the company part of how individuals and organizations used personal computers for work and daily tasks.

Gates held both executive and technical leadership responsibilities during his career at Microsoft. His business history combines product development with the challenge of building a company around software licensing, partnerships and a rapidly expanding installed base of computers.

A transition toward philanthropy

In 2008, Gates moved away from his daily responsibilities at Microsoft to devote more time to foundation work. The foundation's history identifies global health and development as central areas of its activity. Its work involves grants and partnerships with organizations working on health, education and poverty-related challenges.

This chapter is distinct from the creation and operation of Microsoft. Gates's later public role draws on resources and visibility accumulated during his software career, while the foundation is a separate organization with its own programs and leadership.

Writing for a wider audience

Gates Notes is his public platform for essays, reading recommendations and discussion of topics including health, energy and technology. It gives him an ongoing publishing presence beyond Microsoft's product announcements or the foundation's institutional communications.

His biography therefore connects an early software-business career with philanthropy and public explanation. The website makes his personal interests and perspectives accessible in a format that readers can encounter independently of the organizations most closely associated with his name.
