A university project becomes a company

Mark Zuckerberg co-founded Facebook in 2004 while studying at Harvard University. The service initially connected university students before expanding to a wider public. Its early product centered on profiles and relationships, turning social connections into the structure of an online service.

The company grew around a product people used to share information and keep in contact. Zuckerberg's role became closely associated with its product direction as the service moved beyond its original university setting.

Building a family of platforms

The business expanded beyond the original Facebook service. Instagram and WhatsApp became part of the company, serving different forms of communication and media sharing. Its product family connected social feeds, visual publishing and messaging within a larger organization.

Those services are related but do not provide identical experiences. The company had to support different user habits and formats while operating them at scale. Zuckerberg's biography therefore concerns the development of a broader platform business, rather than only the first website he helped create.

The move to the Meta name

In October 2021, the company announced Meta as its new corporate name. Facebook remained the name of a product. The announcement placed virtual and augmented reality within the company's stated longer-term direction, alongside its existing social services.

The distinction between the corporate name and the app name is useful in describing Zuckerberg's role. Meta is the organization he leads; Facebook is one of its products. The company subsequently continued developing its social platforms while also working on other computing experiences.

A founder communicating through his own products

Zuckerberg uses his public Facebook and Instagram profiles to communicate about products, projects and personal interests. This makes his online identity closely connected to the services his company operates. Audiences can encounter the founder within the same publishing systems used by creators and businesses.

His formal responsibilities remain those of chairman and chief executive officer of Meta. The personal publishing presence adds a visible channel around that leadership role, linking corporate developments with a recognizable founder identity.
